It is said to have begun on the sets of the film ‘Do Anjaane’. This film also transformed Rekha’s image from a fat South Indian starlet to a gorgeous and sophisticated B-town actress. Amitabh and Rekha starred in a number of films together – ‘Khoon Pasina’, ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’, ‘Suhaag’, ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, ‘Ram Balram’ and ‘Mr. Natwarlal’.
The initial days of their affair saw the couple meeting regularly at a secluded bungalow that belonged to Rekha's friend. Their affair got noticed when a normally sober Bachchan roughed up one fellow who heckled Rekha while they were shooting for 'Ganga Ki Saugandh'. People had begun noticing how the pair was spending more and more time together, constantly trying to shield their affair from the media glare.
Their last film together ‘Silsila’ (1981) is said to be the real life story of the couple as it portrays the love triangle between Amitabh, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha. On a radio show in UK few years ago, Yash Chopra revealed about Bollywood's most denied affair. He admitted that the affair was definitely going strong before they began filming ‘Silsila’, which co-incidentally mirrored the real life drama. Chopra said, “I was always on tenterhooks and scared (during Silsila) because it was real life coming into reel life. Jaya is his wife and Rekha is his girlfriend and the same story is going on (in real life). Anything could have happened because they are working together.”
 There were even speculations that Amitabh and Rekha were married as she turned up at Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor’s wedding (1980) wearing 'sindoor', a 'mangalsutra' and two rings on her fingers given to her by her lover AB. She captured all the limelight that night - even more than the newly-weds did.
Jaya Bachchan pursed her lips at such shameless show of bravado then but she made herself clear to Rekha later. Jaya invited her home for dinner one day. To quote Rekha, 'Jayaji called me for dinner one evening and though we spoke about everything but 'him', before I left that day, she made sure to tell me: 'I will never leave Amit whatever happens!' Sure enough, Jaya kept her word.
Around the time when 'Silsila' captured this torrid love affair, the couple split. It was the end of one of the most passionate affairs both on and off screen.
It is said that Rekha did not want to settle down with the tag of the ‘other woman’ in AB’s life. It is said that she realized she has no future with AB, since Jaya would not let Amitabh go. And after Jaya made it very clear to her that she would never leave her husband, there was no point going ahead. Today Bachchans’ and Rekha continue to snub each other at parties and award functions.
Was Rekha Amitabh Bachchan’s first wife?
 Well don’t doubt the facts you know because it is a researched possibility by the researcher of past lives, Dr Walter Semkiw. According to him, Amitabh Bachchan was linked to many actresses including the sensuous Rekha. The connection here is that according to Dr. Walter, Amitabh was a Victorian actor known as Edwin Booth during the 1860’s and Rekha is the reincarnation of Booth’s first wife, Mary Devlin Booth.In his book ‘Born Again’, Dr Walter Semkiw, who is a member of the board of directors of the International Association for Regression, Research and Therapies, has shown with detailed studies and pictures how AB could be the reincarnation of Victorian actor Booth, how Rekha could easily be Mary Devlin in past life and also how Jaya Bachchan could be the reincarnation of Booth’s second wife Mary McVickers. Devlin died after a few years of marriage and then Booth remarried McVickers. Not all of us believe in past lives and rebirth but all those who do believe in it would find this an interesting fact.
The glamour attached to Amitabh, Rekha and Jaya is such that even today when they are seen in one place, the camera crews never fail to capture their reactions towards one another.

Call it a rumour or a true story but the alleged affair between the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan and the evergreen beauty Rekha is still a hot topic. Their affair was the talk of the town then but the details of it are still a mystery for most of us. While Rekha has admitted in several interviews that Amitabh Bachchan is the only man she has ever loved, the legendary actor has chosen not to talk about it.
